Build Garden Sheds | Care Overview
When people build garden sheds they, quite rightly, want to get a lot of years use out of them due to the potentially significant investment that they’ve just made and with a little planning and effort that will be achieved. Pay attention to where you site your new shed. It should be on a flat base (to stop the timber twisting) and also make sure that nothing growing nearby can pierce the roofing material allowing water to penetrate the structure.
The timber should be treated with a preservative, the windows should be sealed inside and out with something like a silicone sealant and all the furniture such as locks and hinges etc should be regularly lubricated to stop them rusting.
Build Garden Sheds | Timber Treatment
If you use plain, untreated timber, to build garden sheds, it is imperative that you treat it with a good quality water resistant wood preservative within a couple of weeks and that will also probably need re-doing annually. The wood needs to be treated with a wood preservative to protect it from the elements, insect and fungal attacks.
It is best and most cost effective to use pressure treated timber to build the shed – that is timber which has been treated in a pressure vessel and had a liquid preservative added. A vacuum draws all the air out of the chamber (and piece of wood), before the chamber is filled with the preservative and then a pressure is applied which forces the preservative into the wood fibres and into the very core of the piece of wood. Once treated, the preservative will not leak out into the environment and is a much more effective treatment than applying a preservative annually, by hand, as it requires no further treatment.
The build garden sheds team recommend that you use pressure treated timber for your new build, if at all possible.
